Social media isn’t an SEO magic bullet
Social media is a great link-building strategy and a way to attract an audience – but it’s no replacement for SEO.
In tip 31 of Ranking Number One, we covered the important of inbound links to your site together with techniques for attracting quality backlinks from authoritative web pages.
Rob Birgfeld wrote a piece in smartblogs.com looking at the relative value of social media links and whether these positively impact SEO.
He makes some excellent points, including:
- The biggest social media sites use the nofollow attribute, which requests spiders not to follow the link, thereby deadening the SEO effect.
- Social sharing has the ability to make your content go viral, so even with the nofollow problem it can invite new visitors.
- Social media is more about conversation that SEO, although there are positive SEO side-effects if the conversation is engaging enough.
This piece explains effectively the relationship between SEO, social media, nofollow and the effect of sharing – while social media is no way to replace SEO, but if its done effectively it can augment your SEO effort.
